Wilderness

Wilderness participants are 14 and 15 years old. The focus of the Wilderness program is a more challenging out-trip: seven-days of sea kayaking or alpine backpacking. Wilderness campers participate extensively in planning and preparing for their trip, learning about ocean tides, currents and safe ocean travel or alpine travel and backcountry techniques. In camp, Wilderness participants will gain skills necessary for their trip and enjoy some of the other challenges Thunderbird has to offer. Graduates from the Wilderness program are great candidates for our Leadership program and are strongly encouraged to return and continue to develop their skills. There are two Wilderness trips to choose from. Sea kayaking (Session 1 & 3 boys, 2 & 4 girls) and backpacking (Session 2 & 4 boys, 1 & 3 girls).
