Women of Distinction

The YMCA–YWCA is proud of the part our organization played in bringing the Women of Distinction Awards to Victoria.  We believe that it served the community well and has inspired many women to enrich the lives of others.

However, in recent years, changing demographics, community needs, competing award ceremonies and diminishing financial returns meant that something had to change.  We held focus group meetings with our Women of Distinction Award volunteers, past nominees, recipients and nominators.  We also had one-on-one meetings with our sponsors.  While everyone was passionate about the great work that had been done and the need for a program that honours and celebrates women, there was a general consensus that somehow the vision had to be refocused.   With this information in hand, the Board decided that the Woman of Distinction program would be cancelled.

The Board and staff at the YMCA-YWCA remain deeply committed to programs for women and girls.  However, to truly serve our community, we must be mindful of, and adapt to, the needs of that community and our own funding goals.  A Board committee has been struck to look at programming for women and girls.

Lastly, we’d like to take this opportunity to thank all the volunteers, staff, sponsors and guiding lights who gave their time to this Awards program.  Their effort, dedication and passion are truly inspiring.

Please contact Jennie Edgecombe, Chief Executive Officer, YMCA-YWCA, if you have any questions.
